St Helens, Lancashire

St. Helens is in the north-west of England, about 12 miles from Liverpool, 20 miles from Manchester, and 6 miles north of the River Mersey. At the start of the 19th century, St. Helens as a town didn’t exist. It was formed from the four townships of Eccleston, Windle, Parr and Sutton. The area can be confusing for family historians as sometimes these individual townships are referred to, sometimes St. Helens, and sometimes Prescot, which is the ecclesiastical Parish in which St Helens lies.
